Save the Bees

Slow Food USA is petitioning the EPA to investigate the causes behind bee colony collapse disorder, which some suspect is caused by agriculture pesticides.  I signed this petition in hopes that the EPA will commission an objective and comprehensive study of the problem, without interference from those in the chemical industry.   You can find more information at the SlowFood USA site.

The photograph below was taken at Brick House Vineyards, which is located between Newberg and Carlton, Oregon in the northern Willamette Valley.  I thank Doug Tunnell, owner and winemaker at Brick House, for allowing me the opportunity to capture this image during harvest last Fall and also for bringing this important issue to my attention.

The Tools of Harvest

This is one of my favorite shots from covering the wine harvest in Oregon last fall.

Each picker carries two pieces of equipment into the vineyard during harvest:  clippers and a bucket.  Some work with two or three buckets, clipping clusters and filling each at a pace that I could never approach (without losing a finger or two).

I photographed this bucket of Gamay noir fruit at Brick House Vineyards, which is located in the northern Willamette Valley region on Ribbon Ridge.

Sunrise in the Vineyard

Last Fall, I spent a week in the Willamette Valley shooting the Pinot noir harvest at several wineries.

This image was captured during sunrise at Belle Pente Vineyards, which is located in the Yamhill-Carlton District.  It was such a beautiful morning, with the colors of the sky, vineyard, and valley below rendering in evolving shades as the sun rose above the horizon.

You can read more about my experience covering the Oregon wine harvest here.

The Red Truck

While shooting harvest at Brick House Vineyards last fall, I discovered this vintage red pickup truck, which is presented here in black and white, color, and a combination of the two.

Silver Efex Pro was used to convert the color image, which was processed in Lightroom 3, to B&W.  I then combined the two images in Photoshop CS5, reducing the opacity of the B&W image layer over the color.

Putting these three photographs together in the compilation below appeals to me more than one standalone image, be it color or B&W (more on compilations here).
